What Does an NDIS Plan Manager Do?

A clear, plain-language guide to the role of an NDIS plan manager — what they do, what they don't do, and how they differ from a support coordinator.

What Is an NDIS Plan Manager?

An NDIS plan manager is a registered NDIS provider who handles the financial administration of your NDIS plan. Think of them as your NDIS bookkeeper — they take care of the paperwork so you can focus on your life and goals.

Plan management is one of three ways to manage your NDIS funding (alongside NDIA-managed and self-managed). It is funded separately by the NDIS, meaning it costs you nothing out of your other support budgets.

What a Plan Manager Does

Receive and pay invoices

Your providers send invoices directly to your plan manager. The plan manager checks each invoice against the NDIS Price Guide and your plan, then pays the provider on your behalf.

Track your budgets

Your plan manager monitors your spending across all support categories and sub-categories, ensuring you stay within your approved budgets throughout your plan period.

Send monthly statements

You receive a monthly statement showing all transactions, remaining balances in each category, and any invoices that were queried or declined.

Liaise with providers

If there is an issue with an invoice — such as a charge above the NDIS price limit or an incorrect support item — your plan manager will follow up with the provider directly.

Support both registered and non-registered providers

If you are plan-managed, you can use both registered and non-registered NDIS providers. Your plan manager can pay both, giving you much more choice than NDIA-managed participants.

Assist with plan reviews

A good plan manager can provide spending reports and budget summaries to support your plan review, helping you demonstrate how your funding has been used.

What a Plan Manager Does NOT Do

It's equally important to understand what falls outside a plan manager's role:

  • Tell you which providers to use or make decisions about your supports
  • Provide support coordination (connecting you with providers, implementing your plan)
  • Provide direct disability supports (personal care, therapy, etc.)
  • Make decisions about your NDIS eligibility or funding amounts
  • Replace your NDIA planner, LAC, or support coordinator

If you need help finding providers or implementing your plan, you may benefit from a support coordinator — a separate NDIS-funded role. See below for the difference.

Plan Manager vs Support Coordinator

These two roles are often confused. Here's the key difference:

Plan Manager

  • Pays your invoices
  • Tracks your budgets
  • Sends monthly statements
  • Handles financial admin
  • Funded under Improved Life Choices

Support Coordinator

  • Helps you find providers
  • Implements your plan
  • Connects you with services
  • Navigates the NDIS system
  • Funded under Capacity Building

You can have both a plan manager and a support coordinator — they serve different purposes and are funded from different budget categories.

Does Plan Management Cost Anything?

No — plan management is free for NDIS participants. The NDIS funds plan management separately under the Improved Life Choices support category. This funding is added to your plan on top of your other supports — it does not reduce your Core, Capacity Building, or Capital budgets.

To get plan management, you need to request it at your planning meeting or plan review. If you are currently NDIA-managed and want to switch, read our guide to switching plan managers.
