What Is an NDIS Plan?
An NDIS plan is a personalised document created by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) that outlines the funded supports you are entitled to receive. It is based on your individual goals, needs, and circumstances.
Your plan is developed through a planning meeting with an NDIA planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC). During this meeting, you discuss your disability, your daily life, your goals, and the supports you need to live as independently as possible.
Once approved, your plan includes a total funding amount broken down into support categories. These funds are managed either by the NDIA, by yourself (self-management), or by a registered plan manager like Clear Sky Plan Management.

Understanding Your NDIS Support Categories
Your NDIS plan funding is divided into support categories. Each category covers a different type of support. The most common NDIS support categories include:
Daily Activities (Core)
Assistance with daily tasks such as personal care, household tasks, and community participation.
Social & Community Participation (Core)
Support to help you engage with your community, attend activities, and build social connections.
Consumables (Core)
Everyday items related to your disability, such as continence aids or low-cost assistive technology.
Transport (Core)
Funding to help you travel to appointments, work, or community activities.
Capacity Building — Support Coordination
Funding for a support coordinator to help you implement your plan and connect with providers.
Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living
Therapy and skill-building supports such as occupational therapy, speech therapy, and psychology.
Capital — Assistive Technology
Higher-cost equipment and devices to help you with daily tasks and independence.
Capital — Home Modifications
Funding for modifications to your home to improve accessibility and safety.
Plan Management (Improved Life Choices)
Funding for a plan manager to handle the financial administration of your plan. Funded separately — no cost to you.
Not every participant will have funding in every category. Your plan is tailored to your individual needs and goals.
Your Three NDIS Plan Management Options
There are three ways to manage your NDIS funding:
NDIA-Managed
The NDIA pays your providers directly. You can only use registered NDIS providers. Less flexibility but less admin.
Plan-Managed(Recommended)
A registered plan manager (like Clear Sky) handles your invoices and budget. You can use both registered and non-registered providers. Funded separately — no cost to you.
Self-Managed
You manage your own funding, pay providers directly, and keep records. Maximum flexibility but requires the most time and effort.
You can request plan management at your planning meeting or at any plan review. If you are currently NDIA-managed and want to switch to plan management, speak to your LAC or NDIA planner — or read our guide to switching plan managers.
How to Read Your NDIS Plan
Your NDIS plan document contains several important sections:
Your Goals
A summary of what you want to achieve with your NDIS supports — short-term and long-term. Your goals guide how your funding is used.
Your Funded Supports
A breakdown of your approved funding by support category. This shows how much money you have in each budget area.
Plan Dates
The start and end date of your plan. Most plans run for 12 months, though some participants receive longer plans.
Management Type
Whether your plan is NDIA-managed, plan-managed, or self-managed (or a combination).
Support Coordination
If you have support coordination funded, this will appear as a separate line item in your plan.
You can view your plan at any time through the myplace participant portal at my.ndis.gov.au
NDIS Plan Reviews & Reassessments
Your NDIS plan is reviewed regularly to make sure it still meets your needs. There are two types of reviews:
Scheduled Plan Review
This happens at the end of your plan period (usually every 12 months). Your LAC or NDIA planner will contact you to discuss your progress and plan for the next period. It's a good opportunity to request changes to your funding or supports.
Unscheduled Review (Change of Circumstances)
You can request a review at any time if your circumstances change significantly — for example, if your disability changes, you move, or your support needs increase. Contact the NDIS on 1800 800 110 to request a review.
Tips for your NDIS plan review:
- Keep a record of how you used your supports throughout the year
- Note any goals you achieved and any new goals you want to work towards
- Talk to your support coordinator (if you have one) before your review
- Bring evidence of your support needs — reports from therapists, doctors, or other professionals
- Don't be afraid to ask for more funding if your needs have increased
Using Your NDIS Funding Wisely
Your NDIS funding must be used for supports that are reasonable and necessary — meaning they relate to your disability, help you achieve your goals, and represent value for money.
Spend within categories
Core funding is generally flexible across daily activities, community participation, consumables, and transport. Capacity building and capital budgets are more restricted and must be spent within specific sub-categories.
Use registered and non-registered providers
If you are plan-managed, you can use both registered and non-registered NDIS providers. This gives you much more choice and flexibility.
Keep track of your budget
Your plan manager provides monthly statements so you always know your balance. If you're running low in a category, contact us early so we can help you plan ahead.
Don't overspend
Once your budget in a category is exhausted, you cannot access more funding until your plan is reviewed. Plan ahead and use your funding consistently throughout the year.
NDIS Price Guide
The NDIS sets maximum prices for most supports. Providers cannot charge more than the NDIS price limit. Your plan manager ensures all invoices comply with the NDIS Price Guide.
