NDIS Funding Periods Explained

A plain-language guide to understanding how NDIS funding periods work, what happens to unspent funds, and how to make the most of your budget before your plan ends.

What Is an NDIS Funding Period?

An NDIS funding period (also called a plan period) is the set timeframe during which your approved NDIS funding is available to use. Every NDIS plan has a start date and an end date — and your funding must be used within that window.

Your funding period is determined by the NDIA when your plan is approved. It begins on your plan start date and runs until your scheduled plan review, at which point a new plan (and new funding period) begins.

💡 A registered plan manager like Clear Sky tracks your spending across your entire funding period and sends monthly statements — so you always know exactly where you stand. Learn about our services →

How Long Is an NDIS Funding Period?

Most NDIS plans run for 12 months. However, the NDIA can approve plans for shorter or longer periods depending on your circumstances:

Less than 12 months

May apply to new participants or those with rapidly changing needs. Allows for an earlier review.

12 months(Most common)

The standard plan period for most NDIS participants. Reviewed annually.

2–3 years

Available to participants with stable, well-established support needs. Reduces the frequency of plan reviews.

You can discuss your preferred plan duration with your NDIA planner or LAC at your planning meeting or plan review.

Plan Start & End Dates

Your plan's start and end dates are clearly shown in your NDIS plan document and in the myplace participant portal at my.ndis.gov.au .

Plan Start Date

The date from which you can begin using your NDIS funding. Providers can only be paid for supports delivered on or after this date.

Plan End Date

The last day of your current plan period. Any unspent funding expires on this date. Your new plan should begin the following day, provided your review has been completed.

What if my review is delayed?

If the NDIA has not completed your plan review by your end date, your current plan may be extended automatically to avoid a gap in supports. Contact the NDIS on 1800 800 110 if you are concerned about your plan expiring.

Does Unused NDIS Funding Roll Over?

No — unused NDIS funding does not roll over to your next plan. Any unspent funds at the end of your plan period are returned to the NDIA.

This is one of the most important things to understand about your NDIS funding period. It means:

  • Funding you don't use is lost — it won't appear in your next plan automatically
  • Consistently underspending may signal to the NDIA that you need less funding at your next review
  • It's important to use your supports regularly and consistently throughout the year
  • If you're not using your funding because you can't find the right providers, your plan manager can help

Important: If you are consistently underspending, speak with your plan manager or support coordinator. It may mean you need help finding providers, or that your plan needs to be reviewed to better reflect your needs.

Managing Your NDIS Budget Over the Funding Period

Good budget management across your funding period is key to getting the most from your NDIS plan. Here are our top tips:

Review your statements monthly

Your plan manager sends monthly budget statements. Check them regularly so you always know your remaining balance in each support category.

Pace your spending

Divide your annual budget by 12 to get a rough monthly guide. If you're consistently underspending, you may be missing out on supports you're entitled to.

Plan for gaps in service

Factor in public holidays, provider leave, and any periods where you may need more support (e.g., school holidays, seasonal changes).

Don't leave it all to the end

Trying to spend a large amount of funding in the last few weeks of your plan is stressful and may not be possible. Consistent use throughout the year is always better.

Talk to your plan manager early

If you're tracking to underspend or overspend in a category, contact your plan manager as early as possible. They can help you adjust your supports or request a plan review.

As your plan manager, Clear Sky provides monthly budget statements so you always know your remaining balance. We'll also proactively reach out if we notice you're tracking significantly under or over budget. Sign up for plan management →

What Happens at the End of Your Funding Period?

As your plan end date approaches, the NDIA will contact you to arrange a plan review. This is your opportunity to discuss your progress, update your goals, and request changes to your funding.

2–3 months before end date

Start preparing. Review your goals, gather evidence from therapists and providers, and speak with your support coordinator or plan manager about what's working and what needs to change.

Plan review meeting

Meet with your NDIA planner or LAC to discuss your new plan. This is your chance to request more funding, add new support categories, or change your plan management type.

New plan approved

Once your new plan is approved, a new funding period begins. Your plan manager will be notified and will set up your new budgets in their system.
