Why NDIS Budgeting Matters
Your NDIS funding is approved for a set period — usually 12 months. Unlike a bank account, unspent funds do not roll over to your next plan. And if you run out of funding in a category before your plan ends, you can't access more until your plan is reviewed.
Good budgeting means you get the most out of your NDIS plan — using your supports consistently throughout the year, not scrambling at the end, and building a strong evidence base for your next plan review.

How Your Plan Manager Helps with Budgeting
Monthly budget statements
A clear breakdown of all transactions and remaining balances in each support category, sent every month.
Invoice tracking
Every invoice is recorded against the correct support category, giving you an accurate real-time picture of your spending.
Budget alerts
If you're tracking to significantly under or overspend in a category, a good plan manager will flag this early so you can take action.
Plan review reports
Your plan manager can provide a spending summary to support your plan review — showing how your funding was used and what you may need in your next plan.
Invoice compliance checks
Your plan manager checks every invoice against the NDIS Price Guide to ensure you're not being overcharged.
Practical NDIS Budgeting Strategies
Divide your annual budget by 12
Get a rough monthly spending guide for each support category. If you're consistently spending significantly more or less, it's worth reviewing your supports.
Review your monthly statements
Your plan manager sends monthly statements. Set aside 10 minutes each month to review them — it's the easiest way to stay on top of your budget.
Plan for irregular expenses
Some supports are used irregularly — for example, assistive technology repairs or one-off therapy assessments. Factor these into your annual budget planning.
Communicate with your providers
Make sure your providers are submitting invoices promptly. Delayed invoices can make your budget look healthier than it is, leading to overspending later.
Review service bookings regularly
If a provider has a service booking that is larger than your actual usage, ask them to reduce it. Locked funds can't be used for other supports.
Start plan review preparation early
Begin preparing 2–3 months before your plan end date. Your spending history is evidence of your support needs — use it to justify your funding at review.
What to Do If You're Underspending
Underspending is more common than you might think — and it can have real consequences at your next plan review. If the NDIA sees that you consistently don't use your full budget, they may reduce your funding.
Common reasons for underspending include:
- Difficulty finding suitable providers in your area
- Waiting lists for therapy or specialist services
- Not knowing what supports you're entitled to use
- Providers not submitting invoices promptly
- Supports that were approved but are no longer needed
If you're underspending, talk to your plan manager or support coordinator. They can help you identify the cause and find solutions — whether that's finding new providers, adjusting your service agreements, or requesting a plan review.
What to Do If You're Overspending
If you're tracking to exhaust a support category budget before your plan end date, act early. Once a budget is depleted, you cannot access more funding in that category until your plan is reviewed.
- Contact your plan manager immediately — they can provide a detailed spending report
- Review your service agreements to see if any can be adjusted
- If your needs have genuinely increased, request an unscheduled plan review from the NDIA
- Contact the NDIS on 1800 800 110 to discuss your options
